Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme run by Jill at Breaking the Spine where we discuss the books we're anxiously awaiting for release.
Book: Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Author: Laini Taylor
Publisher: Little, Brown & Company
Release Date: September 27, 2011
Summary from Goodreads: Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands;" she speaks many languages — not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.
When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?
This book was featured at the BEA YA Buzz panel, and the publisher compared the heroine to Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That, combined with the early rave reviews coming in, and I'm sold. Plus, I'm a sucker for masquerade masks, so this cover totally draws me in.
What do you think of the cover? The summary? What books are you waiting on?

I have an ARC of this, I can't wait to start reading it! It sounds soooooo good! :)
Are we the same person? I love masquerade masks, too. What I'm looking forward to about this book, though, is the setting. Prague is on my list of places to visit Before I Die.
I have to confess that I'm a little bit nervous about the comparison to Lisbeth Salander because I actively chose not to read the books. I was afraid they would be too dark for my tender sensibilities. Then my dad (my dad!) told me it wasn't that bad in order to get me to watch the movie with him. I am scared for life. And possibly squeamish.
Consider me sold too, though I hadn't heard about this book before your post. I bet it will be making the rounds soon. Looks good.
THAT is one sexy, intriguing synopsis. I had not heard about this book before, so thank you so much for spotlighting it!
I'm reading Laini's "Lips Touch: Three Times" right now and I'm sure I'll be joining you on the wait for this one. Plus, I hadn't heard about the Lisbeth comparisons so now I'm even more curious! :D
Sash & Em sent me an ARC of this one, because they looove me!!! I'm SO excited to read it!
I've got this one on my TBR list as well and I'm really excited to read it. Shari (My Neurotic Book Affair) You can see my WoW http://myneuroticbookaffair.blogspot.com/2011/07/waiting-on-wednesday-7062011-i-loved.html
Oh btw I love your blog and am now following!
I can take or leave the cover it does not do much for me - but the synopsis - I have to read this book:) Thanks for sharing today.
Sounds like a great read! If the protagonist is comparable to Lisbeth Salander then I know I'll love her!
Sounds intriguing, unique and definitely worth reading. The cover for me is just "meh". I don't like the lighting or the washed out colors in the person behind the masks skin. The shadows really bug me and is it just me or does she have a missing eye?
Sounds interesting, and I also like the mask. Oh I hope you get it and let us know if it is good!
Oh, I haven't heard that the heroine has been compared to Salander. Well, I'm sold! :)
@Jacinda - JEALOUS. That is all.
@Ruby - Yes, yes we are. Now the interwebs are on to us! I wouldn't trust your dad. Do not go see the movie, my little Tender Heart Care Bear.
@Missie - Yep, I'm guessing we'll get flooded with rave reviews any day now.
@Linds - And here I thought I NEVER knew anything before you! lol
@Stephanie - That one's on my TBR as well. I've heard it's awesome.
@Bookish Brunette - I hate you, you tease.
JustkiddingIloveyou.
@Shari - Thanks, and welcome!
@Denise - Right? I think it sounds really unique and interesting.
@Kat - My thoughts exactly!
@Gina - I see what you mean. I wish the cover had more of a three dimensional feel instead of looking so 2-D. Then I think the shadows would be more interesting to look at.
@Melissa - Me too! (hope I get it) :P
@Aylee - That's all anyone has to say to me anymore to get me to read their book. If it's not true, though, and she's nothing like Salander, I may throw things.
@Sally - I think I need to add it to mine and join the RAK!
I was looking forward to this book a lot more when I thought it was The Girl of Fire and Thorns (which has princesses. I see no princesses here. Boo). I can't keep track of all these titles.
I have to admit, I'm not loving the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo comparison. I don't have any interest in reading those books and the MC sounds annoying. Ok, so I've never actually read them so I can't say for sure, but I'm comfortable in my ignorant dislike.
@Small - I just heard about the Girl of Fire and Thorns today and I am officially obsessed! I'm sorry I have no princesses to offer you.
I will allow you to remain ignorant about Salander but I think she's pretty awesome. :)
I got this one at ALA! I'm looking forward to reading it.
Please stop by my WOW.
I haven't heard about this one. I'm impressed if the MC is compared to Lisbeth.
The cover looks more like New Orleans than Prague.
This sounds interesting! Thanks for stopping by my blog, Books and Barks, today!
I got this at BEA but I honestly had no idea what it was about. Looks like I have to move it up the TBR pile. I loved the cover and title.
@Arianna - I hope you like it! I must get to BEA or ALA next year. :)
@Alison - Yeah, I can't figure out what the cover has to do with the story, and then the summary mentions Marrakesh as well? So confused about the setting!
@Jennifer - Thanks for hopping back!
@Karen - Yeah, the cover is really eye grabbing. Good for you for picking it up! Hope you like it!
I really, really can't wait to read this one as well!! Great pick!
