This week's question is:
I have to admit that I'm more often affected on this level by nonfiction books than I am fiction books. Some of the first books that came to mind for this question were books like Lies My Teacher Told Me, Dead Man Walking, Outliers, and How to Make Love Like a Porn Star. These were books that challenged me, outraged me, taught me. They put me in awe, put me in my place, put me in another's shoes. Compelling nonfiction grabs me because it's true. It is about real people, real lives, real truths that shed light on the human condition. That kind of knowledge impacts me far greater than fiction.
I highly recommend all four of those books, by the way. They are all 5+ stars for me.

Sadly, I've not read any of the books that have affected you. For me, The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand probably had the most profound effect even though I don't buy into the objectivist philosophy.
I don't read too much nonfiction, but your absolutely right about it being all the more powerful for having actually happened or those people actually existing:) Have a great weekend Logan!
Weird. My sister just finished reading How to Make Love Like a Porn Star and gave it to me with a stern look to read it asap. Weeks later and it's still on the TBR pile.
I don't know why I'm so put off by nonfiction. Maybe there is a RC that could help me overcome my misgivings?
Happy Friday, Logan!
So I'm like Missie--I've never been able to get on board with nonfiction books. Maybe we should make a pact. A reading challenge wouldn't work for me. I suck at them.
I read Gone with the Wind over and over as a YA and even after. Each time I wanted Scarlett to learn before it was too late, though I knew she wouldn't. I was fascinated by the Civil War and how Scarlett seemed to personify that war. But personally it made me vow to wake up and smell the roses. Not sure how that worked for me, but at least I try.
Oh I'd actually have to say it wasn't so much a book but a sentence or a paragraph that just fit perfectly in what I was either trying to say or feel at that time. Something that just defined it perfectly. :)
I just added Lies My Teacher Told Me to my TBR! I remember in high school knowing that many things in the textbooks were wrong...I need to read this book one of these days! I bet my dad would enjoy it as well...he's a history buff!
