TGIF at GReads! (13) & Weekly Recap

Friday, September 16, 2011

This Friday blog hop is run by Ginger at GReads! (who also created this beautiful button). Each week she posts a new question for us to ponder. Click the button to join in!

This week's question is:

Book Disappointments: Have you ever come across a book you were so stoked to read, but it failed miserably in your eyes?

Isn't that the worst feeling ever? I've definitely had some that stick out from recent memory. Between by Cynthia Tefft - I thought it would be like a young Outlander style book and I was so excited to read it...and then it offended me and I ended up not enjoying it after all. So sad.

Another big one? Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. It was such a disappointing ending to the build up of the previous three books. Why the random shift to Jacob's perspective? It irked me to no end that the middle third of the book just jumps away from the action. And after all their chaste waiting-for-marriage crap, I found the love scene less than desirable - and then she IMMEDIATELY becomes pregnant? Ack! No! Bad bad bad! And let's not even get into the horror show that was the birth scene, or Bella's fate as super vampire who needs no training, or the creep factor of Renesmee. I was such a fan of Twilight, and to have the series reduced to this crazy whacked out soap opera mess at the end really upset me.

In all seriousness, I could have a conversation for days about that book. Hit me up in chat if you ever want to get me going.

What books have disappointed you?

aaaaah Logan! Point Counter Point it is SO ON! I loved Breaking Dawn. Favorite of the whole series--exactly because of how you described it :P

Hahaha your description of Breaking Dawn made me giggle:) I could talk for days about that book too, I didn't hate it, but it just felt so different from the other books which I adored. And you're right, being disappointed in a book you were dying to read is the worst feeling. I always think maybe I should stop and then start again and maybe I'll like it more. Like a do over:) Never works though.

What you wrote about Breaking Dawn makes me glad that I never read beyond the second book.

My most recent disappointments have been Wither by Lauren DeStefano and All These Things I've Done by Gabrielle Zevin. In both cases I have be unable to suspend by disbelief enough to get into the story. Also, I would have liked more explaination about WHY their worlds are the way they are. I don't like to just be told this is how things are, now lets move on to the kissing. ATTID is coming back to the library unread, which irks me, but has to be done.

@Smalls - It's on like Donkey Kong! We should totally switch to that topic. :)

@Jenny - It was a totally different feel from the rest of the series. Sigh. I could go on and on.

@Amanda - I've turned many a reader away from it. Go see the movie and you'll understand what I mean.

@rockyriver - I've heard that about Wither, too. I've still got it in my TBR pile at home but I think I've hesitated so much because of other people's reservations.

Only if we can include paints :) I need a paint version of the birth scene in my life.

HAAHAHA I actually don't find Breaking Dawn all that horrible, but Twilight is still my favorite of the series.

I'm surprised more people didn't pick Breaking Dawn!

I have BEtween on my Kindle but haven't gotten to it yet.

Holy crap, I can't believe I missed putting Breaking Dawn on my list. That is THE most disappointing book. Ever. I cried because I thought it was such shit, lmao.

Ah! I never even thought to put 'Breaking Dawn' down as an answer, but I completely agree! What a horrible ending to a series...

LOL- I liked Breaking Dawn...but I understand many hated it. I guess the only issue I had with it was Bella seemed liked a different character but I just took that as getting married and having a demon spawn doing that to a girl.....

:D
